Day off

Finally got a day off today. Initially wanted to go gai gai. But then was too tired to move. Working really makes one feel tired. Stay at home can recuperate and save money. Once i step out of the house, I will definitely spend money. Wanna pamper myself.
So i slept till late. Till 11 plus in the morning. Acutually i woke up a 9 plus. To go toilet. Haha. Then just went back to sleep. Such a luxury. Saved more money by having combined breakfast and lunch. Good.
Managed to finish my book. "curious incident of the dog in the night time". Must read k. It's a short book but interesting. You will get hooked.

I am a workaholic

I love work. Cos working gives me more money. With more money, i can buy more things i like. Spend, spend and spend. Buy, buy and buy. Helps the economy too. If people just hold onto the money, the money cycle does not continue. What goes around comes around. If you buy something in shop A, then the owner of shop A will have cash. So this owner can go and buy something else. The money may eventually come back to you.
What i am trying to say is, work is good. It's better than doing nothing. But sometimes it gets tiring. Like this past week. I worked weekends plus i gave tuition. So not enough rest and i am feeling drained at the moment. Hopefully, I can take off during a weekday.

The case of the mysterious bug

This is really a bad week. I should say BAD. Cos my cultures have kena some kind of contamination. This contamination is friendly to the cells. It does not harm the viability but slows the growth slightly. The disgusting part is that the contamination is not obvious. The culture appears slightly not clear. Not even the typical cloudiness. And it develops a few days later. Supposed to change the media every three days. Now this contamination shows up later. So the clear culture might be contaminated too. Goodness. Still adopting a wait-and-see attitude. Guess cell work is like that. Kena contamination is really stressful. So frustrating.....

Library trip

Went to the library to return comic books. Just read sherman's lagoon and get fuzzy. i simply love them!! the animals in the comics are so cute. make me laugh. =) Emily, you will like get fuzzy. The guy, Rob, is a vegetarian. He treats his pets real well too. Although they are quite frustrating at times.
I wanted to borrow more comic books to destress but i couldn't find any i like. Therefore, i decided to try my luck at the fiction corner. been checking out books such as tuesdays with morrie, the da vinci code etc and see if they are available. For the past few visits, i did not manage to get my hands on any of the bestseller. But today's my lucky day. I found a whole row of "the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime" on the shelf!!! Wow. Plus i got to borrow "a short history of nearly everything"- a book recommended by a friend.
Once I got home, I started reading the first few pages of "the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime". It's pretty interesting. At least, me, the reader is captivated. Unlike some books which are boring and slow-paced.

I am a scaredy cat

I was alone in the lab on Sunday. Don’t your thoughts start to overtake your logical mind at times? I get scared easily and any tiny noises just freak me out. I nearly jumped when there were noises coming out of the machine. Relax gal. Then the silence scared me too. I was afraid to look around for fear I would see anything.
Shucks, I had to visit the toilet. There was pin-drop silence in the loo. Of course lah. Duh. But I was frightened as well. I did not dare to look in the mirror or look around in the cubicle. Just did wat I had to do and dash out. The weird thing was the female toilet’s lights were on. They were only supposed to come on when someone enters the toilet. Some energy saver thing. And I was the only female on that floor. Gasp. So I checked the other toilet on the next floor. The lights were not on. That totally freaked me out and I did not dare to go to the toilet anymore for that day.
When I was at my table, staring at the computer screen, the lights went out. Some energy saver thing again. It was spooky. I quickly got up and reset the lights. I am afraid of the dark, especially this month. Just when I was about to leave the office, the phone rang. The first thing that ran through my mind was the Japanese horror flick, the ring. Who will be calling an empty office. That was when I realised the office was not as empty as I thought. There was another colleague right at the other end. Phew.

Hot date

The fabulous four have struck again! Where to this time? The place we arranged to meet was food street in Chinatown. But then again, we were so indecisive that we dilly dally. First, we walked over to take a look at the only jap restaurant and were not that satisfied with wat we saw. The place looked more Chinese than authentic jap. So jam said she vaguely recalled that Chinatown point had a sakae sushi. We trekked down to the place and were sad to see the sushi place was gone. Three of us were craving more Japanese food. I simply love jap food. Slurp.
Then ming fei suggested going to yuki yaki in cineleisure. We agreed cos at least there were more options in orchard. Food here we come!
By the time we started eating, it was 7.30pm. This place offers buffet and has food like sushi (though limited), steamboat, bbq plus ice-cream (that you “cook” yourself). We took the tom yam base and were so spiced up by it. It was amusing to see our food swell up in the soup base. The mini fish became huge fishcakes! Anyway, dun think we ate much but were rather full.
Time to cook the ice-cream. The hot plate was changed to a cold plate and we could cook the ice-cream. Amazing concept. Suddenly, our stomachs had exact compartments for dessert. Someone asked, “how many flavours?” Ming fei immediately replied, “19.” Wah she was actually eyeing the ice-cream. And we tried all the 19 flavours. The chocolate was so chocolatey; the almond so almondy and the corn so corny. Haha so bimbotic.

How to marry a rich guy

Heh this is not the movie starring sammi cheng. It was the topic for the ladies first show hosted by lan xin mei on channel u every sat at 1130. The guests were very candid in discussing how to identify rich guys and how to hook one.
To identify a rich guy:
1.He should be using his credit card often. Not paying with cash cos that will mean he has bad debts with the credit card company. But hor pple can just sign up more cards and the debts will snowball further?
2.He should belong to a club. A member of an exclusive club, even better
3.Ask him wat's his hobby. If he says basketball, forget it. Golf? Got potential.
4.He can appreciate the fine arts. Listen to classical and jazz music.

How to hook one:
1.You must get the connections to be invited to the right places. So start networking!
2.Pick up golf. Doll yourself up and practice golf. But dun play well so this will give a chance for the guys to offer you tips.
3.Be an air stewardness, hotel staff, actress. These people have a higher chance of hooking a rich guy.
4.Venture into the business class section on the plane. How? Make an excuse that the toilets in the economy class are all occupied.
5.Ask the prey to hold your handbag for you while u try to remove something stuck on your shoe. Then strike a conversation with him. Usually guys are too polite to ignore you.

How to tell if he's well bred
1.He does not flaunt his wealth. So he wont tell you that he owns 5 cars, 3 houses etc on the first meeting.
2.He pays attention to you when you speak and do not cut you off.

Erm all the things people will do to marry a rich guy. But anyway who dun wanna be rich? The take home message is in the modern days, if gals wanna be rich, just get rich on our own. Rely on a guy? Wait long long…..

hot date on friday

This was one hectic Friday. Action packed. Had so many things to do with my cells. Count the number of cells in the 6 well plates (altogether there were 41 wells), change the medium, transfer them to shake flasks to expand their growth, centrifuge cells and do cell sorting. The whole process was messy….cos it was my first time doing it. I was slow and confused. Thank goodness, my sup was there to help me. The best part was when he asked if I brought dinner and I answered no, he let me go home first. He helped to finish up the analysis which would take another hour. So I gotta leave around 8 plus. I really need to streamline the whole process and be more efficient.

Lunch date with the Director

I have heard scary stories about the director and the presentation sessions. You can get grilled badly. But my sup assured me that the director is very very nice to the students cos wanna entice people to do post grad studies. So I was more relaxed after hearing his words.
At exactly 12 noon, the interns all trooped upstairs for the lunch date. The plus point was that there was a free meal. Not too bad. Duck rice from science canteen, with egg and vegetables. Then, one of the interns mentioned that she did a project on microbial contamination on the food in science canteen and the duck rice stall had the most number of bacteria! Luckily, I din get a stomachache.
Yup the director was very nice to the students. Just chit-chatted on stuff like how we were coping, what we were doing etc. But was a one-to-one chit chat like an interview. I felt like I was assessed by the quality of my answers. Nerve wrecking in a way. This is the real working world! Think we are being constantly graded to see if we can fit in with the company and have the potential to contribute. Hope everything goes well and my answers were satisfactory.

treat

My brother asked for a treat since it’s my first pay. So we decided to order pizza for dinner. First, it was a choice between pizza hut and the 2 for 1 pizza. I looked at the leaflet and did my sums. The 2 for 1 pizza has a good deal supposedly. The family combo comes with a pizza and one set of side a (list of food items listed include shepherd’s pie, ice cream etc) and one set of side b (another list of items with food like curry pie, calamari etc). I thought it was all the food items on the list. The word “set” is so misleading. I called to order the pizza and the lady said choose one from side a and one from side b. Felt a bit cheated. But I still got pizza-just one pizza and got the second one free and calamari. The plus point is that there is no service charge and gst. When the food came, it was piping hot. Then I realised there was an outlet near my block. The guy who delivered the food was someone living in the next block. What a small world! The pizza was alright but the calamari was not. There were only 8 pieces of calamari!! The lady told me there were ten pieces. Gee, such untruthful representation of their products. So think pizza hut is still better, but more ex lor.
Since we were still hungry, I went to buy satay. Yummy! I love satay, especially mutton satay. What a good, filling meal. Burp.
